Decomposed Granite & Sand
Granite is a tough, hard, igneous rock. Decomposed granite is formed from the weathering and erosion of solid granite as it occurs naturally. It is similar to gravel, but finer. DG marketed as landscaping material is commonly composed of fine particles measuring three-eighths-inch, or smaller. Some particles are the size of a grain of sand.
There are advantages to choosing DG.
-
It breaks down, so any DG that migrates into lawn or planting beds does not cause problems the way gravel does. Lining a path or patio with a decorative wood, stone, brick or metal edge will help keep it in place.
-
DG does not attract pests.
-
DG is more durable and longer lasting than organic mulch materials
Decomposed granite is installed in three forms:
-
Natural DG is used as a mulch material and can be spread around trees and garden beds much like wood mulch. It will continue to weather after it is put in place and provides nutrients to surrounding soil and plants. It lasts longer than most other mulch materials and will not attract pests.
-
Stabilizers are added to DG to serve as a binder. See our Stabilizer page for full details.
-
Resin is added to DG. The resultant surface is similar to asphalt but has a more natural look and retains the permeability of DG.
DG is used in the landscape for:
-
paths
-
trails
-
patios
-
driveways
-
as a no-water usage ground cover
-
as a mulch
-
to create a visual transition between landscaped garden areas and adjacent wilderness
