Gravel and Aggregate

gravel garden path

Gravel refers to rock that is smooth, caused by natural weathering and the breakdown of larger rock.

Coarse, angular rock, caused by crushing the stone, is called aggregate. Specific aggregates are used as either decorative landscaping rock or as base rock.

Geologists classify rock types by the size of the particles:

Silt or clay - less than .02 mm

Sand - .02 to 2 mm

Gravel - 2 mm to 2 cm

Rock - over 2 cm

We call a rock over

8 inches a boulder

We supply a wide variety of sizes and colors of rocks in each material grouping.

Pea Gravel

Pea Gravel are small, rounded, smooth stones. This rock is often used as a pathway, on playgrounds, in dog runs, or underground for drainage or pipe bedding.

Crushed Rock

Crushed rock, or angular rock, has jagged edges. It is a wonderful choice for placing around plants for use as rock mulch.

River Rock

River Rocks get their rounded, smooth shape by erosion within a water setting or by weather. River rocks will be loose and roll around rather than pack together. These are great decorative accents.
